Guster vs. Jeff Garlin vs. The West Coast

Here's the deal with the "collaboration" between Curb Your Enthusiasm and Guster I hinted at a few weeks ago:  It's not a Season Six band cameo on the show.  I wish.  But it's the next best thing, a five-episode podcast of a long, winding conversation between two Guster members (the singer and the drummer) and our friend Jeff Garlin, who plays Larry's agent on the show.

If you have people in your life who like Curb Your Enthusiasm but don't know Guster, this is your chance to get them hooked on our.... conversational... skills?  Having befriended Jeff at our Central Park show two years ago, we thought a mutual podcast would be interesting since we like his comedy and he likes our music.  Around the time we were finishing up "Ganging Up on the Sun" we actually went into the studio with Jeff and recorded it.  A lot of topics get covered since it's almost an hour long.  This might be the deepest Guster interview to date.  Don't fear the podcast.

A ten-minute episode will become available, for free, every Monday in October, on our website and through iTunes.  I am told there are five mondays in October this year.  Anyway, you can rest assured that we'll remind you about this next week.  On to the tour dates...

Visit for more information, and to play whack-a-mole with Ryan's head.

Opening for Kansas in Iowa

Hello from back-on-the-road. Texas. We're ready for our red-hot Friday afternoon slot at the Austin City Limits Festival tomorrow. If you're attending the festival this weekend, and tired of watching bands from the middle of a field, you can come see us play a more intimate show late Friday night with Gomez at La Zona Rosa (details below).

Five (5) other touring developments:

1. We added an Ohio show to this tour to make up for our cancelled ones this summer. It's November 8th at PromoWest Pavilion in Columbus. We realize that people in Cleveland and Pittsburgh still hate us. We can not return the feeling. We have nothing but love for Cleveland and Pittsburgh.

2. Another pillar in the career of Guster will fall when we open for Kansas at a free show in Iowa next month. It's in Iowa City, where we used to play a lot in the mid-nineties. Back when we were wayward sons, carrying on in a van. {Insert your favorite 'dust in the wind' joke here}.

3. Speaking of Kansas, our Kansas City show on September 22nd has been moved from the outdoor "City Market" to the fabulous indoor "Beaumont Club," where there's a mechanical bull. Come on down, even if you're coming to the freebie in Columbia on the 20th. We know K.C. is in Missouri.

4. West Virginia!

5. For those of you reading this email from Spokane Washington or Orono Maine, we're coming for a visit. October 2nd and November 16th, respectively. All the information is below, along with all the non-Spokane-or-Orono tour dates. Here we go again...

Heading west...

Tertiary Markets!

Gusterrhoids. We've got a bunch of new tour dates to announce, in the following urban centers:

Harrisonburg VA
Salt Lake City UT
Omaha NE
Minneapolis MN
Greencastle IN
Ann Arbor MI
Milwaukee WI
Geneva NY

Did you see, there are proper Milwaukee and Minneapolis shows. And a Halloween show in Nebraska. And a triumphant return to Salt Lake City. And at long last, our Greencastle Indiana debut! These are old-fashioned Guster headlining rock concerts, and a handful of them are going on sale today. Check the big list below for details.

We're also playing Las Vegas NV at the Vegoose Festival on October 29th. It's a two-day Halloween-themed rock concert featuring Tom Petty, Ben Folds, Fiona Apple, and "much much more." Check out the full line-up at

It's not unlike the Austin City Limits Festival we're playing on September 15th, before we head out to the West Coast with Nada Surf where will we make sweet music together and abuse bold face type until the wee hours of the night.

That's it. Tune in next week when Guster meets Curb Your Enthusiasm. No kidding.

Guster & The Boston Pops on Conan O'Brien 8/10

Hello Gusterrhoids...

Put your cassette tapes in your VCRs and program them to record next Thursday night, August 10th, as we'll be making an appearance on the Conan O'Brien Late Into The Night Television Show on NBC along with our old friends, the Boston Pops Symphony Orchestra (or, as many of them as we can fit on stage with us -- probably about 10 of them).

And if you live west of the Mississippi, beware that the Guster / Nada Surf tour (formerly the Guster / Ray LaMontagne tour) will be making its way out west in September and October. Tickets go on sale this weekend for many of those shows. Here's the on-sale schedule:

Dallas: tix go on sale august 5th
Austin: tix on sale now
Houston: tix on sale now
New Orleans: tix go on sale august 12th
Tulsa OK: tix on sale now

I just discovered "tabs" -- did they work? Anyway, complete ticketing information is listed below. Hey, did you Arizonians see the Arizona show? We're coming to Arizona, damn it. It's gonna be so Arizona. You spoke up, and we listened and now we're playing in Tucson September 27th. Democracy at work.

Next week the tour resumes in Toledo Ohio, where our good friend Trippin' Balls ( will be joining us in Ray's absence for one night. Be sure to get there early as the Balls play first, followed by Rogue Wave and then the Gusters.

From there the tour heads east to Rochester NYand two nights in Boston MA. Tickets are still available. I'm just gonna print the whole tour schedule again -- there's nothing else below that, so if you're tired of reading our tour dates, you can just move on now.

It's A Shame About Ray

Hello Gusterrhoids:

Everybody loves Ray LaMontagne! But he's dropping off the tour in September, due to "unforeseen conflicts in his schedule." Here's the official word from his camp:

Ray LaMontagne regretfully has to cancel his participation in the second leg of his co-headlining tour with Guster due to unforeseen conflicts in his schedule. There are also a few midwest dates that are affected during the first leg. He enjoyed the first leg with Guster and is disappointed he can't continue at this time but is looking forward to returning to the road soon.

It's too bad, since the shows so far have really been great and we've been flattered to be on the same stage with someone as talented as Ray. More bad news: The shows in Cleveland, Columbus, and Pittsburgh have been cancelled (8/4, 8/5, 8/6). Full refunds are available from the point of purchase, and we hope to make it up to Ohio on our next tour. Kettering and Toledo are still on though! Bring your cornhole bags!

Nada Surf are taking Ray's place as opener, along with Tristan Prettyman, for the second leg beginning in mid-September. Everybody loves Nada Surf! Most ticket prices have been adjusted to reflect Ray's departure (meaning, they're cheaper now), and some venues have been switched as a result too. Here are some recent developments in our touring world:

INDIANAPOLIS (July 29th) -- Special acoustic in-store at Luna Music at 1:30pm. INFO:

TOLEDO (August 8th) -- Show will be Guster & Rogue Wave, without Ray LaMontagne.

DALLAS (September 14th) -- Show has been moved to the Gypsy Tea Room. Tickets on sale real soon.

AUSTIN (September 15th) -- Special late-nite show at La Zona Rosa with Gomez. TICKETS:

LOS ANGELES (Sept 29th) -- It's now a one-night stand at the Wiltern. September 28th show has been cancelled.

SEATTLE (October 3rd) -- Note the new date and venue... October 3rd at the Moore Theater.

Much love

The Gusters in the Northeast

We will be playing our instruments in the Northeast this week. I want to say we'll be playing in the "tri-state area" this week, but that gets controversial. And neglects Maryland. So if you live near Baltimore, New York, Philadelphia, or Connecticut, this week is your chance to catch our summer tour with Ray LaMontagne. Remember, even though it's a double bill, we're playing our full headlining set. More Guster songs than you can stand. Here are the details:

REVERB: The Adam-created environmental non-profit group REVERB will be with us all summer, fueling our vehicles with biodiesel, setting up eco-villages at every venue, and putting on some food drives as well (check our website to find out which shows). You can even pick up "Cool Tags" to neutralize the carbon emissions from your drive to the show. Here's their website:

JOE'S PLACE: is over! You can still watch all five episodes on our website. See you guys later.

Thu Jun 29 '06 08:01 am

You've barely moved an inch this week, Mr. Branches...

Gusterrhoids! This first week of having-an-album-out-again has been a lot of fun. Thanks for all your nice emails about Ganging Up on the Sun and the Leno appearance, and thanks especially for helping us debut at #25 on the Billboard Album Sales charts -- just 167 units behind Nickelback at #24. Nickelback!! Next week we plan to drop off the charts but thanks to you guys we always make impressive debuts...

We want to let you know that the fifth and final episode of Joe's Place is now streaming on our website. It's the saddest episode, but no one dies in the end... be sure to watch all the way until the end of the credits. Thanks to Dave Yonkman (er... D.F. Yonkman) for hours and hours of sweat putting that together and dealing with our label's lawyers.

Down here! Here I am! Still promoting things. This Friday we'll be on one of our favourite radio programs, "Morning Becomes Eclectic" on KCRW in Los Angeles. Tune it at 11am or catch it streaming on the worldwide web at -- and later this Friday we're taping an NPR show called "Day to Day" ... stay tuned for airing information.

We're getting bored of the photos on our website! If you have any that you think are front page-worthy, upload them to a free hosting service and send the link to us at -- We'll pick the best ones and feature them on the front of

REVERB will be joining us this summer to keep up the green work when we're on the road. Also, our friends at Rock for a Remedy, Inc. announce the first two food drives of the tour: Prospect Park in Brooklyn and The Chevrolet Theatre in Wallingford. Non-perishable, non-glass food will be accepted on site to benefit local community food shelves. This time, we'll be taking cash donations too. One dollar allows a Food Bank to purchase five pounds of food! Each person who donates 10 items or more (or $2 plus) will be entered into a raffle: One lucky donor and a guest will win an after-show meet & greet with Guster! Stay tuned for more dates with food drives

Much love,

Additional dates added in the municipality of Nuuk, capital of Greenland!

Oh, and our album came out today.

Honestly, there were so many good suggestions for anticlimactic day-of-release subject lines, I just went with the most obscure one. So thanks to Dawn Kingsnorth from Greenland... when we rock Nuuk, you're totally going to be on our guest list.

It's now a tradition that once every three years, when we release an album, we very temporarily get hi-fi on your asses and include a little embedded image in our otherwise text-based email announcement. So here it is, the album cover for GANGING UP ON THE SUN... and our apologies if this little technological journey happens to erase your hard drive:

If you would, check and make sure they're selling it at a music store near you. And you can always visit the iTunes Music Store and grab it for ten bucks. However you obtain our album, know that you're acquiring something we're very proud of, and please share it with everyone you know. We worked for the better part of a year and a half on this record and it's all time well-spent so long as people hear it. We realize the only reason we're still here today is because our fans have been so passionate about spreading our music. So from the bottom of our hearts, thank you, and keep up the good work.

And just in case the sound on our new album isn't enough of a change for you, we've given our website a makeover. Don't worry! The same stale jokes we wrote in 1997 are still up there getting older and older, we just gave the page a fresh look. We hope you like it or at least can get used to it. It's (duh)...

And after that the real touring begins. Stay tuned!

Fri Jun 16 '06 12:55 pm

This just in...

"Keep It Together" came out three years ago, on June 24th, 2003. There was a lot of anticipation since it took so long to write and record, and the day it was finally released, I put out one of these here email announcements with what I considered the most brilliant, ironic, and playfully subversive subject line in the history of Guster emailer subject lines:

Obstructed View Seats Still Available for Boise Idaho Show!

My anti-climactic genius was lost on some people at our record label, who still haven't forgiven me (like, they think some people here *never* found out about Keep It Together because they only skim the subjects or something). In any event, at the risk of alienating the good people of Reprise Records just a little bit more, I am accepting your suggestions for what to put in the subject next week when "Ganging Up on the Sun" comes out. Bring them on, the suggestions. If yours gets used, I will give you guest list spots.

There are some interesting promotional events going on for us, in honor of Release Week being here -- events as boring to most of you as an album listening party in Florida, and as exciting to most of us as singing the national anthem at Fenway Park.

There are also a few live performances at record stores coming up (Philly, Boston, Portland, Seattle, etc), so check this link to see if our "interesting promotional events tour" comes to you over the next couple of weeks:

If you like our band, then check out the E-town broadcast schedule at -- our interview and acoustic performance that we recorded in Boulder CO in the spring is airing this week on the show (NPR-affiliated radio stations). And while we're on the subject of Colorado, no, we're not playing Red Rocks with David Gray. Ticketmaster fucked that up.

Have you seen the Guster Player yet? See the Guster Player!

This just in -- Joe's Place Episode 4 went up! Yes!

Until next week.

Tue Jun 06 '06 3:45 pm

14 days and 14 nights...

Gusterrhoids.... things are happening. Read!

• Our album comes out two weeks from today! But they tell me Rhapsody has the whole thing streaming online as of this morning, so go listen to it! It's free. Pass it around to friends if you will, to help us get the word out. Here's the link:

• Also, we have five songs from the album, along with our video for "One Man Wrecking Machine" and the Joe's Place episodes all in one neat online player now:

Joe's Place Episode 4 is being held up by our new best friends, The Warner Brothers Legal Department. Seriously, it should go up any day now. I was eating a chicken carcass in episode 3, by the way, not a "porcupine" as someone suggested in an email. If it had been a porcupine, the Warner Brothers Legal Department would have made us edit it out

• We're playing the Jay Leno TV Program and also the Craig Ferguson TV Program late in June. It's like three weeks away. Watch us, see if we screw up! You only get one take! And now we have some new tour dates to tell you about.....

Rhode Island gets the big cd release show this time! It's going to happen in Station Park, downtown, on the 22nd of June. It's only ten bucks through WBRU! But for twenty bucks you get a cd too, and we'll sign it after the show. How is this possible! has all the details. Look for it under "tour dates"...

We still play block parties! Apparently everyone in Minnesota already knows about this event, but you can get tickets after any Basilica Mass, at any metro area Borders Books, or by calling (612)-317-3511. They have a website too, and it's a dot org.

This one's a long way away, but we're kicking off the western leg of the tour with Ray LaMontagne by playing this festival and then wishing we could stick around and see all the other bands. You know what, at this point I may as well just list the entire summer tour as we know it. It will turn this little 2K email into a mega 7K email but sometimes you just have to cut and paste.

Are there any questions?

Thu May 25 '06 3:54 pm

Become a Wrecking Machine?

Although we pretty much got out of the way while an amazing animator did his thing. You have to watch this. I can't believe this is our video and not some other band's video. Especially after the huge debacle that was The Making of Fa Fa. Anyway, we now have a temporary splash page up at so you have no choice but to find the link to the "One Man Wrecking Machine" video, but if you'd like to see it right this second, try this:

We can all watch it while we wait for Episode 3 of Joe's Place to get released from the frightened hands of the Warner Bros Legal Department. You say the word "Comcast" just ten times in ten minutes and suddenly everyone's freaking out...

We need to find some people to join our "street team" to help us advertise local shows and check stores to make sure our new album is in stock, etc... are we really calling this a "street team," Dalton? It's a dorky name, but our only other idea, "The Guster Wrecking Machines" is equally dumb. One of those (dumb) names will stick. In any event, we're offering a free download of an unreleased song from the new record in exchange for signing up. It's called "Empire State" and it's sad and poignant and beautiful, so sad and poignant and beautiful that it feels awkward aligning it with a "street team" promotional idea, but what the heck. All you really do when you sign up is join a list where we email you about helping us flyer now and then. Worth it. Totally worth it. Enlist yourself here:

An E.P. specifically for independent record stores. It's good to support independent record stores. Those of you who want to check out more of the new album before it's released on June 20th can pick up the limited edition One Man Wrecking Machine EP that's being sold exclusively in independent record stores beginning May 23rd. We put "Ruby Falls," the album's seven minute piece de resistance, on there along with some random rare nuggets. Here's the track listing:

1. One Man Wrecking Machine (from Ganging Up on the Sun)
2. Days (Kinks cover)
3. Ruby Falls (from Ganging Up on the Sun)
4. Two at a Time (demo version)
5. Good Feeling (Violent Femmes cover, live w/ Gordon Gano on violin)

And here's where you can find it:

It's August 12th and Ray LaMontagne can't join us so we're gonna do a night without him. Here are the shows that went up for pre-sale this week:

8/5/06 Columbus, OH
8/11/06 Boston, MA
8/12/06 Boston, MA
8/16/06 Essex Junction, VT
8/17/06 Saratoga, NY
8/19/06 Portland, ME

Go git 'em! Visit or to get in on the pre-sale (though if you miss it, the real sale will happen soon so don't worry). Our website has the complete list of summer tour dates on it too.

Until next week, when the emailers will begin coming twice as often. Hooray!

Wed May 10 '06 11:59 am

Again with the summer tour...

Those of you who got hooked on our making-of-the-record soap opera, "Joe's Place," last week should check out Episode 2, which begins streaming from today (remember to refresh your browser). In this week's episode, Ryan tries to feed peanut butter to a snake. That's crazy! He's Brian Fellows!

Um. Tickets to a bunch of our summer shows are now on sale via Music Today Pre-Sale. This is a way for you, the members of our email list, to get first crack at the good seats (with lighter service charges) before the formal Ticketmaster on-sale date, and before the Ray LaMontagne fans snatch them up. Specifically, if you live near one of these cities:

.. those shows are now on sale through our Music Today Pre-Sales. And our Brooklyn NY and Holmdel NJ shows are on sale now through Ticketmaster. Through the food drives hosted by Rock For a Remedy on this spring tour, you guys donated over 2 TONS of food to local food banks. You guys rule.

We have two very exciting ebay charity auctions to let you know about this week in Guster Saving the Earth...

1) A Guster and Peter Frampton signed acoustic guitar. Proceeds to go to support Reverb and the Campus Consciousness Tour:
2) The head staples and staple remover from Adam's tampon dispenser incident. Ew. Proceeds go to Rock For a Remedy:

You can watch Ryan pulling a staple out of Adam's head on the YouTube by following this link:

Finally, you will have the option to add fifteen cents ($0.15) to your ticket this summer to plant a tree to offset the paper used for your ticket through the Tickets Plant Trees Program. Do the right thing.

And that, my Gusterrhoid friends, is enough emailer-ing for now.

Until next week adios ** the Gusters

If you read just *one* Guster email all year...

If you read just one of these little email announcements all year and ignore the rest, this would be the one to read. All the way to the end. No skimming.

Joe's Place is now up and running on the front page of -- check out episode one, it's got teaser snippets of the new songs and way too much footage of me talking. We'll reveal a new episode every week or so until the album comes out on June 20th, and those of you who are geeks like us can sign up to receive the episodes as a video podcast.

You can pre-order Ganging Up on the Sun from our website while you're there. Holy crap, it's coming out in just eight weeks! The first five hundred people to pre-order the album at will get autographed copies delivered to the comfort of their cement doorstep the day it comes out. All shipping is free on pre-orders in the US!

We're going on a huge summer tour and Ray LaMontagne is coming with us. Were finally getting a chance to play all the venues where we used to just open up for other people. We hope to see you there. We'll be closing each night with a full set following a full set by Ray LaMontagne, a singer-songwriter that we're huge fans of. The tour starts up in July and will go all the way to October, but you're best off getting tickets sooner than later (some tix go on sale this weekend).

Did you see the Brooklyn date!? We're playing in Brooklyn and I can walk there from my apartment. The second leg of the tour will begin in September and include the western half of the country (both Greeks!)... stay tuned for that.

But for those of you joining us this summer, we've set up a page at My Local Bands so you can coordinate road trips and meet up with one another. Check out the site when you get a chance, it's brand new. Right now we have only 4 friends. And one of them is our manager:

Finally, the Campus Consciousness Tour is still soldiering on for another week:

4/27 @ Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove PA (570) 374-0101
4/29 @ Amherst College in Amherst MA (413) 542-8448

Adam hit his head

Adam hit his head on a tampon dispenser while getting off the toilet today, and had to miss the National Biodiesel Press Conference he'd scheduled here in East Lansing Michigan. While the rest of the Gusters were on hand to fill-in, we were far less eloquent on the topics of renewable fuels and alternative energy than Adam would have been, so our first plug in today's emailer will go to the Campus Consciousness Tour, which is well underway out here as we tour the academic institutions of our country. Visit, or the bottom of this emailer to find out how you can participate in the green side of our rock concerts.

And visit to read more about Adam's crapping injury.

For those of you who didn't figure out who we're playing with at the 6th Annual Jammy's in New York based on the hints "talk box" and "are you feeling me" -- it's legendary guitarist and singer Peter Frampton. We're playing "Do You Feel Like I Do" together for thirteen psychedelic minutes at the Madison Square Garden theater on April 20th. More information here:

Andrew Bird opens the shows next week in the midwest, and Luke Temple joins us for the upstate NY run after that. These guys and their albums come highly recommended from the Gusters.

I screwed that up last time but the show sold out real fast, so if you got tickets make sure you note the correct date. Sorry. I play drums and sometimes give misinformation in Guster. And for those of you who are tired of being turned away from our New York shows, stay tuned because there's a big summer announcement coming in the next emailer.

It's Monday night (April 10th) at the Cubby Bear, but you have to win the tickets from WXRT in Chicago. First, register to be a "VIP" here: -- then sign in and try to win the Guster tickets. Oh, it's a 21+ show and the last day to enter is Friday April 7th. Sorry, we're slow. Me drums. etc.

But oh what promos they are! Visit to watch. The real episodes will kick in in another week or two.

- Win a pair of tickets and meet and greets to the sold-out Hiro Ballroom show 4/21.

- Bid on an Alvarez acoustic guitar signed by Guster.

All proceeds go to support the Consciousness elements of the tour.

Campus Climate Challenge events:

The Campus Climate Challenge is a coalition of 25 youth environmental groups working to get students at 500 universities across North America to reduce their campus' global warming pollution down to almost zero as quickly as possible. Come attend alongside members of Guster the various environmental events happening during the day of the shows. Check for details.

guster on a boat

guster people. please enjoy this week's email in bold headline form.

i think that our hectic touring schedules and grass-roots style of development once led people to consider us a "jam band" even though we can't improvise a lick and generally write three and a half minute pop songs. now that it's 2006 and we're secure with our pop identities, we're playing the 6th annual jammy awards on april 20th in new york city -- it's an awards show for jam bands that combines older legends with younger bands (we fall in the "younger bands" category even though we're in our thirties). we'll be a part of a two-song collaboration where we'll play one guster song (probably one from the new album), and one song backing up the legend we're paired with, and his talk box. we can't say who it is but some of you out there are feeling me...

april 20th @ madison square garden theater

if you're a new yorker and you've been wanting to see us play a small venue like back-in-the-day, this is your chance. we're playing the 600-capacity hiro ballroom in manhattan next month and tickets go on sale today. that's like, a wetlands-sized venue. it's all a part of the green apple festival in new york which celebrates earth day. look how goddam green we are!

april 21st @ hiro ballroom, nyc
festival information:

our los angeles shows this weekend have been sold out for a while, but scalper-dickhead-people bought out a bunch of the tickets and have been trying to peddle them on ebay for a month now. i'm just saying, no promises, but some tickets might become available at the box office on the day of the show or some scalper-dickheads might sell you tickets for face value. we just want our fans to be able to see us play our instruments. godspeed.

i think it's a carnival cruise ship, just like the one where a fire broke out yesterday and that person died. but it'll be fun, we promise. we're joining the barenaked ladies for a trip to turks & caicos island in january 2007. we're the opening band. why are we telling you this now? there are only 200 cabins left on the cruise -- canadians make their plans well ahead of time. tell your travel agents:

we're still just in "promo mode" for this, but the first episode of our own making-of-the-album docu-comedy ("docu-comedy" is a term coined by our record label, not by any member of guster) is just a week or so away. to watch our new video promos check in at our docu-comedy home on the worldwide web:

One Man Wrecking Machine

We'll be debuting "Joe's Place" in a few weeks at -- this is our little sitcom that Dave Yonkman created from the hundreds of thousands of hours of studio footage he shot in the last year or so. (That's means he had to sift through like a million billion terabytes of information). In the meantime, we've posted some cute promos for the show on our website. You can follow this link to watch one:

The goal is to unveil a new episode every two weeks or so until our album comes out on June 20th. Those of you with video iPods or "computers" will be able to download them through the iTunes music store eventually. So like I said, our album comes out on June 20th! It's called "Ganging Up on the Sun" and these days I'm comfortable capitalizing the "G" in "Ganging," the "U" in "Up," and the "S" in "Sun," while leaving the "o" in "on" and the "t" in "the" lowercase. For now thats working for me. Here's the final track list, in case you're keeping score at home:

1. Lightning Rod
2. Satellite
3. Manifest Destiny
4. One Man Wrecking Machine
5. The Captain
6. The New Underground
7. Ruby Falls
8. C'mon
9. Empire State
10. Dear Valentine
11. The Beginning of the End
12. Hang On

Those songs, in that order, added up to a great record for us. If you notice a song missing that we've played live or mentioned in the studio journal, chances are it will get released in due time on a B-sides record. We have a lot of those. B-sides.

Besides that, today's an exciting day as our first official "single" was released. "One Man Wrecking Machine," batting clean-up on the album, will be the first song you might hear on the radio. Feel free to request it and see what happens. The album version has been uploaded to our myspace site: and the single version is available today at the iTunes music store. The album version has a 40 second masturbatory intro that the single version doesn't have. The single version has a wholesome electric guitar in the first verse that the album version doesn't have. There's also a b-side to the single, an up-tempo number called "The New Underground," over at iTunes.

And finally, as we often do when we've been off the road a little while... we're going back on the road. The tour dates have all been announced but never this neatly. Ticketing information and other details are waiting eagerly for you at -- and you can scroll to the bottom of the list to see who our opening bands will be on this tour...

Food drives:

Remember, this is all part of our "Campus Consciousness Tour" and the person who donates the most food at each show wins aftershow passes. "Rock for a Remedy" (capital "R's" lowercase "f" and "a") is in charge of that. Click here for more information: "

More Campus Consciousness Tour Dates!

Gusterrhoids. There are a bunch of new shows listed here underneath the block of west coast dates that you already knew about. Our website will have all the latest information as we learn it, but if it's on this list the show is open to the public...

All of the dates are part of our "Campus Consciousness Tour" idea.  To explain what that means, I need to paste in something that Guster's very own Adam Gardner wrote about it:

For the first time since 1995, we won't be able to refer to our tour bus as the "Earth-Eater"--with the help of the National Biodiesel Board, it will be running on biodiesel.  Thanks to the folks at NativeEnergy, we will also be offsetting our carbon emissions with wind power.  There will be a bunch of cool activities ranging from a "Pimp My Clean Ride Car Show" to community service workshops and projects throughout the tour.  At each concert there will be a "Consciousness Pavilion" hosted by eco-friendly companies, Clif and Luna Bar.  Here you can learn about wind power, biodiesel, sign up for a service learning project, and grab a sample of an organic energy bar.  In addition, there will be a food drive at every show, signed guitars you can win, and opportunities to "meet Guster."  To learn more about all of the stuff happening on the Campus Consciousness Tour, go to

By no means does our involvement in the Campus Consciousness Tour mean we will begin playing long, extended, meandering solos in every song on the spring tour.  I don't know where you got that idea.

One last thing before we go away for a week or two -- I donated the bongos that I used on the "Lost & Gone Forever" album to Dave Schneider of Zambonis/LeeVees fame so he could auction them off for a benefit concert he's putting on.  If you have a lot of money and want my bongos, check out these links:

Guster to play their instruments out west

If this, the first Guster emailer of 2006, were to arrive in shocking full technological splendor, a graphic dreamcoat of embedded images, large colorful fonts, and hyper-active links, would you consider that a good thing or would you miss the old days where the drummer was still figuring out how to use "tabs" and stuff?  In other words, let me know when it's no longer endearing.  I'm on some other bands' email lists and I know we're not exactly cutting edge.

I bring it up because things are picking up over here.  Your pleasant little hiatus from Guster news is through, and we're about to come at you with a fury of information, tour dates, and new music this year.  We're even going to have six episodes of our own making-of-the-album reality sitcom to broadcast from our website soon.  Strap on Kyle, let's ride!

First things first.  The record will be called GANGING UP ON THE SUN and it's coming out June 13th on Reprise Records.  You won't have to wait that long to hear music though -- "Manifest Destiny" is already up on our myspace site, and other tracks will be seeping out to the public through digital singles, EP's, videos, and online jukeboxes over the next few months.  The only thing left for us to do on the album is sequence the order of the songs, and we plan to drag that process out as long as possible.

Second things second.  The Gusbus (now fueled with biodiesel!) is ready to take us, and our instruments, to you.  The tour begins next month on the west coast.

After these dates we're heading to the midwest and east coast for some college shows, taking a little break, and then gearing up for our album release.  We'll be bringing a small eco-village with us on this tour, promoting alternative energy, social justice, community service projects, food drives, and soy! soy! soy! Maybe not so much soy.  But thanks to Adam and his wife's organization, Reverb, we will be launching our first "Campus Consciousness Tour"... be sure to check it out if you can make it to a show this spring.

You'll be hearing from us,

See you in oh six

Happy Holidays, Gusterrhoids!!

This will be our last announcement of the year and it feels like a good time to reflect. It was a year spent recording lots of music, and releasing very little music. Next year will be different. We will be releasing albums and recording next to nothing, I presume. 2006 feels like a vintage Guster touring year.

In any event, a rough mix of "Manifest Destiny / Sorority Tears" is streaming from our My-Space site. I have never been to this My-Space place, I swear. But I know that it's bigger than Jesus and maybe even The Beatles. Here's the link to our page:

And after a couple days of technical issues, the iTunes store now has the track(s) on sale for 99 cents. Here's the link:

Thanks for another year of humbling support, loyalty, and encouragement. See you in oh six,

Your friends the Gusters

Sorority Tears (for fears)

This week we again make the shift from reclusive studio band to open-to-the-public touring band, beginning where we like to begin in the warm welcoming bosom of the midwestern United States. Details about all the midwest shows are contained in this email, but there are also some new releases, charity auctions, and free frozen gigs to tell you about...

We're about a month away from releasing a digital single on iTunes... for 99 cents you'll be able to download "Manifest Destiny / Sorority Tears" -- a hybrid of two new songs for one low price. By putting a slash in the title and cross-fading the music, we got our record label to agree to pretend it was just one song. "Manifest Destiny" will be on the new album, and contains a swear word. Parents be advised.

It's a free block party at 1201 Villa Place to mark the opening of our management's new office in Nashville, where the recently-wedded Michael "Pasty" Corcoran will talk on the telephone, shuffle his fantasy sports line-ups, and otherwise live off the road. Originally conceived as a chance to "warm up" for our tour, our set time seems to be shrinking along with the temperature. When we go on at 8pm it might be 40 degrees outside and we'll be lucky to survive a 40-minute set.

Guster recommendation: Bundle up, bring a flask, but don't travel from out of town. The Thundergod may chicken out on this one.

The plugged-in evening show at the Riviera is sold out, but you can still get into our daytime acoustic show at Schuba's through WXRT's "Live from Studio X." Information on how to win is available at

flaring up!

We've added new shows in Baltimore MD and Ithaca NY to our fall tour, plus three new college dates in the Northeast. Looks like the schedule's complete now, and you can scroll on down to the bottom of this message to check out the full list.

Many of you Gusterrhoids flared up when we announced these shows, demanding "west coast tours" and "some love for the state of Florida" and "better music." We here at Guster hear your complaints and are working to resolve them. The six songs we're currently recording are shoe-ins for the new album, which we hope to release and support in a very geographically-thorough way early next year. In the meantime our studio and road journals will resume shortly and there's plenty of touring news below...

So between now and the start of the tour, we'll be at the weddings of Ryan Miller and Michael "Pasty" Corcoran (separate weddings)... as well as recording a new batch of 7 songs that we hope to introduce on this next tour. I know it's been a while since we've released music to you, but there's a lot forthcoming. You can't handle it all!

In the meantime here are two Guster-related side projects to know about...

1. "The LeeVees" featuring Adam Gardner (of Guster) and Dave Schneider (of the Zambonis) are releasing their first Jew-themed record "Hanukkah Rocks" on October 25th. Visit for Jew-themed information.

2. The first ever Rosenworcel-produced record just came out on Tuesday. "Sam Champion" is the name of the band, "Slow Rewind" is the name of the record, and "Noah Chernin" is the name of the former-Guster-rep-turned-indie-rock-idol who fronts the group. It took us a week to make the album and I love it. Visit to check it out.

Much love,

Bri & the Gusters

Playing concerts in New York City

Neglected atrophying Gusterrhoids...

Please forgive our extended absence from your lives. We've been locked in a room without windows, again, preparing another batch of songs that will ultimately bring the number of recorded-but-still-unreleased tunes in our back pocket up to twenty (20). One way or another, these songs will find their way onto your iPods in due time. The plan is to get the proper full length Guster album out early next year, and maybe a five-song EP of delightful album rejects out in time for the holidays.

But the plan is also to tour a bit, on the heels of this recording session and, coincidentally, on the heels of yet another Guster member's wedding (speculate people, speculate)... so it's with great pleasure that I announce a big fall tour! Combing the Northeast and the Midwest, sprinkling fresh songs on... sprinkled people.

The tour will be from mid-October to mid-November, and will culminate with our first proper New York City headliners since Radio City Music Hall show in 2003:

November 18th @ The Nokia Theater, Times Sq. NYC
November 19th @ The Nokia Theater, Times Sq. NYC

It's a brand new venue and much more intimate than most of our shows in the city, so we recommend getting tickets as soon as you can. They actually go on sale this Saturday at noon through Ticketmaster (212) 307-7171.

Here's the link to our very own Ticketmaster page: -- and all the information is summarized neatly at too.

Stay tuned for the rest of the tour dates real real soon. There's gonna be one in Chicago. Promise.

Much love,

Guster + Vince Vaughn

Greetings Gusterds,

Look for "I Hope Tomorrow Is Like Today," the song we wrote and recorded with Ben Kweller, in the movie "The Wedding Crashers" starring Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson. We're also on the soundtrack along with Spoon, The Flaming Lips, and Jimmy Eat World. So, if you never made it that deep into "Keep It Together," here's another chance to hear our most slow-danceable song ever. Click here for your chance to win a free copy of the soundtrack (along with an autographed movie poster, DVDs, and more).

Alive with pleasure!

Whoa! News!

We finished making our album today. Sort of. There's still a song to mix, but for all intents and purposes it's done and for all intents and purposes we love it dearly. What sort of broad statements can I make about it in a mass email announcement, five months before it's hopeful release date? We really went for it this time. We had our best batch of songs yet and our most positive recording experience yet. It's our first album as a four-piece band, and our first self-produced effort. Check out the Studio Journal at for more details. The album may or may not be called "You Say France & I Whistle."

We're going on tour tomorrow. Just a coincidence that we finished making the album today, the day before we leave for a tour. We didn't cut any corners I swear. So we'll be trying to play these songs at colleges for the next few weeks. Check out the ever-growing list of spring dates at the bottom of this message.

Pasty has left the building. Our beloved tour manager of 6 years, the mythical Guster-Rep-turned-most-popular-crew-member-of-all-time doesn't want to be on the road anymore. We'll miss him terribly, except for the foot fungus thing that he never did kick, even with prescription toe medication. Check out the latest Road Journal on our website for a brief unworthy tribute to our fair-skinned friend. Well-wish him here too: -- I'm sure he'd appreciate it.

Guster & The Boston Pops Orchestra June 22nd & 23rd. Holy shit. Someone really made this happen!? We're playing a set with the Boston Pops at Symphony Hall, two nights in a row in June. New songs, old songs, second violins, timpani, etc. You have the choice between cheap tickets and really expensive tickets, depending on how close you want to be to Keith Lockhart and the Thunderman. Worldwide starlets!!

We're halfway through the album-making process here in Nashville, Gusterrhoids... we sound good!   The studio journal at has been up and running for over a month now.  What are you waiting for?  Go read about kick drum tones!   We actually have some real things to report in this here announcement...

Our scheduled March dates in England have been postponed until May.

Here are the new details:

May 18th @ Night & Day
Manchester UK

May 19th @ The Garage
London UK

And with that piece of news, the British will no longer be the first ones to hear our new tunes performed live.  That frightening privilege belongs to the distinguished student body of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, because as soon as the album's done we're celebrating with a two week college tour!  Most shows are open to the public, but all shows are in the Midwest!  No more will we hide our love for the Midwestern people behind a superficial veneer of token concerts in other regions!  We're out!

A limited number of advance tickets for the open-to-the-public shows go on sale Friday, February 18th at (password = guster).  These are special "Guster Ticketing" tickets only available to recipients of the Guster email newsletter (this thing), and anyone else with access to the internet.  You can get there from the tour dates page on our website too.

The Gusters getting lost in England

We realize this email only really affects the .0005% of you that are currently in England, but our first ever U.K. tour is a month away, and we thought we'd spread the word through this list in case any of you know people out there who would shell out ten pounds to see Guster.

Maroon 5 (that's a household name now, yes?) invited us to play four shows with them:

Nov 4th @ Apollo in Manchester
Nov 5th, 6th, & 7th @ Royal Brixton Academy in London

But with Maroon 5's album being big-like-Thriller over there, those four shows are sold out. They were sold out before we were even added to the bill. So, we've tacked on our own headlining date:

November 8th @ Bush Hall (310 Uxbridge Rd, London W12 7LJ) (telephone: 020 8222 6933)

Tickets are available now: & 0871 2200 260

I must admit it's a little bit of a dream come true to be typing venue phone numbers that begin with a zero. If you can help us draw an audience from across an ocean, we'd love that. The British will be the first to hear a new batch of Guster tunes.

I think I might start writing a Songwriting Journal on the website beginning next week... you can follow the process, or at least as much of it as I choose to reveal, that way.

This one tastes like the cow got into an onion patch

Big news for those of you who've been waiting for a price break before you picked up our DVD! A much cheaper, DVD-only version of "Guster On Ice" was released today in stores, we are told. Please to check on this for us. It's $12.99 for just the DVD if you order through our website ( You can get the version with a second disc of 13 live recordings for $19.99 there too.

In other news, welcome to the Guster Offseason, and thanks for making the KIT touring era so damn special for us. We're holing up in a rehearsal space in Brooklyn to write songs for the rest of the year -- an album will hopefully be recorded in early '05 and released next summer. You can keep up with us on the website via the studio journal if you like, and these emailers will pop up whenever there's something exciting to announce, like a potential visit to the UK in November. No shit!

The Sun Shines Down On Me

We recorded a song called "The Sun Shines Down On Me" for the upcoming Daniel Johnston tribute album, which is due in stores September 21st on Gammon Records. The album is called "The Late, Great Daniel Johnston: Discovered, Covered," even though Daniel Johnston's not dead. What a wonderfully ironic title. Since most people are unfamiliar with his work, the album will be a two-disc set, one disc of covers, one disc of Daniel's original versions.

And as huge fans of Daniel Johnston's songwriting, we encourage you to check this one out. Proceeds benefit Daniel Johnston, who is not dead, but is in a difficult situation, medically and financially. Other artists on the compilation include Beck, Tom Waits, Sparklehorse, Bright Eyes, Death Cab For Cutie and The Eels.

Guster / Ben Folds / Rufus Wainwright Summer Tour

It's true, this summer we're going on tour with Ben Folds and Rufus Wainwright, two wicked pianists who we listen to in our spare time... it's a triple-headliner, so everyone will play an hour a night and the order of the bands will change every show, though the line-ups will be announced ahead of time. We recommend getting tickets in advance when they go on sale (mostly this weekend) because the shows might sell out.

Here are the dates:

Wait. No. Before you look at the dates. Many of you will notice that we're ignoring large chunks of the country -- the Guster/Folds/Rufus tour only lasts a month so we're planning to service the rest of you (Florida, Texas, Colorado, West Coast, etc) on our own before we retire to a rehearsal space to write a new album for the rest of the year. No one will go unserviced!
